It's Halloween season! Decorate Safely... and Enjoy!

Decorate safely for Halloween!
It’s that time of the year again! Halloween! That time of year where anything goes. Being professionals in the fire and water restoration business, Halloween mishaps are far too familiar for us. Did you know that an estimated of nearly 10,000 fires were reported to fire departments in the United States over a 3-day period for each year from 2017-2019? With interior and exterior decorations involving lights, music, projectors—the list goes on and on--- it is important that we take measured safety precautions to keep from being part of the growing statistic.
Avoid extension cords for your interior Halloween decorations. It is always a good practice to inspect your extension cords prior to decorating for the holidays. Just like anything else, it is quite natural that your equipment, decorations, and extension cords deteriorate over time. It is best if you avoid extension cords inside your home when decorating for Halloween altogether. Rather, as a safety precaution, stage your décor so that your electrical decorations are within reach to the electrical outlet. Extension cords running through the house, especially in high traffic areas of the home are a sure-fire (no pun intended) way to have a fiery, Halloween mishap!
Don’t be Clark Griswold for Halloween. Well, if you can find a “Clark Griswold” costume, that would be killer. Just avoid decorating like him! You may think stringing lights on the exterior parts of your home is a “Christmas thing.” Not entirely. Every neighborhood has the one Griswold-type who wants to outdo the others when it comes to their exterior décor! If you insist that you must have your house strung with lights, it is wise to avoid nailing (or stapling) electrical cables to your home, as the clips are literally electrical conductors. Each of these cables are insulated with jackets designed by manufacturing engineers to protect consumers against electric shocks and electrical fires. Driving a nail through the cord should be avoided at all costs.
There’s a safe way to light your jack-o’-lantern. An open flame candle inside of a hollow pumpkin, unattended on your front porch is not it! A simple wag of a dog’s tail in anticipation of being let back in the front door is enough to knock your jack-o’-lantern into the beautiful, freshly laid pine straw nestled around your front shrubbery. Or even more common—what would normally be an unnoticed whisk of wind can be just enough to cause a disaster, especially with it being next to that dried cornstalk your wife picked up from the department store. Instead, opt for battery-operated LED lights or even a glow-stick would suffice.
Protect those Pipes this Fall Season!

Protect your pipes from experiencing a freeze resulting in water damage
It was not too long ago when the State of Georgia experienced a historic freeze event that left people stranded in their commute home from work. Remember when Chipper Jones took to his faithful four-wheeler to rescue then-Atlanta slugger, Freddie Freeman? It was certainly one of those memorable, heart-warming stories in the national news. Little did we know at the time, the catastrophe of being unprepared as a state to navigate snow and ice-laden roadways would be just the beginning. . . . It was merely the prequel to what would be an historic frozen pipe event that caught us all sleeping on being prepared!
According to the Farmers’ Almanac, this coming (2022-2023) Winter in Georgia will be “shivery, wet, and slushy.” It is expected to be colder in the Southeast, in general, this Winter, including the Peach State! If you are unfamiliar with how the Farmers’ Almanac works, join the crowd! However, the formulas utilize various factors, such as the moon, tidal action, sunspot activity, and even planetary movement. Elon, you there? The almanac winter forecast for Georgia calls for a solid mix of precipitation, with icy sleet and snow, to be expected.
If you are betting with the farmers of Georgia to have more of a grasp on the coming winter weather than your neighbor, there is never a better time to earn those brownie points from the wife by protecting your pipes! 3 simple steps for members of your household, or facility management team, to proactively decrease the risk of pipes bursting due to freezing temperatures. Insulate your pipes. Pipes in and around your home or commercial building that are exposed are most susceptible to freezing. If you are the DIY type and feel like you could tackle this at your home, here’s a solid guide to knocking out this project this Fall so that you’re prepared for the cold winter. Let ‘em drip. Maintaining a very light, but consistent drip from your faucets really does go a long way in preventing frozen pipes. Turn up the heat. Don’t ignore the weatherman. When a cold snap comes, cranking up your thermostat protects your pipes. For the projected coldest nights, leaving your thermostat up overnight, or if you know you will be away from your home during a cold snap, set the timer to come on for a couple hours in the morning and in the evening to keep things warm.
At the end of the day, it is important to learn from our recent history by taking proactive steps to limiting the risk of another freeze destroying your home. While insulating your pipes, letting your faucets drip lightly through the night, and maintaining a consistent, warmer temperature in your home are great ways to decrease the risk of frozen pipes (and worse—the burst!). There are several more ways in which you can proactively get out ahead of the coming freezing temperatures, all the while enjoying the Fall weather! We recommend speaking to a local professional on more ways you can go about protecting your pipes.

If you own a commercial property, look for these issues around the building
7/6/2022 (Permalink)
Our Commercial Division sees a lot of inevitable but also avoidable issues around commercial buildings. Some of the issues are due to poor maintenance, old buildings, structural issues, etc.
We like to talk to Engineers and Property Managers and explain the importance of building upkeep. If they see recent cracks, it is important to investigate to make sure that it is not a sign of larger underlying issues. This is especially troublesome if cracks are found in the foundation of the building since it can indicate structural issues. If you see leaks, no matter how small, you should call a professional company to do a thorough inspection, since there could be hidden problems behind walls, cabinets, ceilings, etc. If the leak could be related to the roof, call a trusted roofer to inspect for missing shingles, holes, or other damages.
If you see any of these issues, consider calling SERVPRO of Decatur to do an inspection around your property. We have highly trained technicians available 24/7 to help you. Call us at 404-378-9998.

Fire Safety for Kids
6/1/2022 (Permalink)
Now that kids are out for the summer, it is important to talk to them about some fire safety tips.
In the United States, the U.S. Fire Administration estimates that $280 million in property is damaged each year due to children playing with fire.
The American Red Cross recommends that you keep matches, lighters and similar ignitable objects in a secured location out of kids' reach.
Buy child-resistant lighters and flameless candles. Install smoke alarms on every floor of your home, specially inside bedrooms and sleeping areas.
Test all the alarms in the home regularly, by pushing the test button.
Show kids what to do and where to go in case they hear the smoke alarm go off.
If you had the misfortune of being affected by fire and are still dealing with smoke and contents damage, call SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998. We are available to help 24/7.

Have you checked your washing machine connections?
5/19/2022 (Permalink)
At SERVPRO of Decatur, we see this problem all the time. A homeowner calls the office with water damage due to a faulty washing machine connection. We recommend that you check your appliances regularly and fix anything immediately, do not say “I will get to it later,” because later can be too late. Remember, damages caused by lack of maintenance are not always covered by your insurance policy.
It is very common when there is water damage due to the washing machine, that a hose failure is to blame. Your machine has three hoses, two for hot and cold water, and the third to drain the water. If there is a faulty connection to the machine or wall, the chances of a problem increase dramatically. Make sure to tighten the hose. If your washing machine is not new, maybe now is a good time to replace those hoses. It is recommended that the hoses are replaced every five years or so.
Prevention is better than remediation, so take care of those small details now.
If you need help, call SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998, we are available to help 24/7.

How residential fires get started
7/30/2021 (Permalink)
Experiencing a fire, no matter the size can be very traumatic for a family. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) published a report that showed there were 1,291,500 fires in 2019, 3,704 deaths, and 16,600 injuries. According to the National Fire Protection Association, three-quarters of civilian fire deaths were caused by home fires, and children under 5 and the elderly are at a higher risk of dying in situations like this. Fire losses amount to almost $15 billion.
Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires with almost 50%, following by heating equipment (14%), electrical distribution and lighting equipment (10%), Intentional fires (8%), and smoking materials (5%).
The majority of home fires start in the kitchen, that is why it is essential that you do not leave the stove unattended while cooking.
Install smoke detectors throughout the home, and make sure that every level of the home has at least one.
If the unthinkable happens and you are affected by a house fire, please do not hesitate to call the experts at SERVPRO of Decatur. Sewage backup damage
7/29/2021 (Permalink)
It is very difficult for homeowners to deal with water damage in their homes, but there is an extra level of stress when it is due to a sewage backup since that can be dangerous to the family living in the home.
In the industry, that type of water damage is categorized as a Cat 3 or “black water.”
It is important to identify what kind of water our technicians are dealing with since different sources of water cause different types of damage.
Clean water
This is the least contaminated, and it comes from a relatively sanitary source. It does not contain waste products and it comes from overflowing sinks, burst pipes, broken appliances, snow, and rain.
Gray Water

Sump pumps and rainwater damage

We have had a fair amount of rain these last couple of weeks here in Decatur, and we have received several calls from homeowners dealing with flooded basements and crawl spaces. In some of those cases, the reason why their homes had sustain water damage was that the sump pump had not been working.
When was the last you inspected your sump pump? Most manufacturers recommend inspecting the unit every couple of months, especially if there is a big storm or heavy rain coming, to make sure the sump pump is working properly.
A sump pump is a device installed in the lowest part of a basement or crawlspace to help prevent this space from flooding and keep it as dry as possible, by keeping the water away from the structure.
SERVPRO of Decatur has the experience, qualifications, and necessary knowledge to help homeowners deal with this type of water damage.

Hurricane Dangers This Season
7/23/2021 (Permalink)
According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), we will have an above-average 2021 hurricane season, which started June 1st and runs through November 30th.
The updated National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently updated the definition of the “average season” using new data. Now, an average season has 7 hurricanes and 14 named storms. It is estimated that in 2021 we will have 7-9 hurricanes (2-4 that could be categorized as 3 or higher), and 15 to 18 named storms.
Sadly, hurricanes not only affect coastal areas but can cause severe damage to properties more than 100 miles inland. Storm surge, heavy rainfall, inland flooding, landslides, high winds, and tornadoes can cause catastrophic damage.
If you have not done so, take to your family and come up with an evacuation and emergency plan. If your home or business has suffered storm damage, call the experts at SERVPRO of Decatur. Our certified technicians will help you throughout the mitigation and reconstruction process and make it “Like it never even happened.”

Do you know how to use a fire extinguisher?
7/22/2021 (Permalink)
Do you have a fire extinguisher at home? If so, do you and your family know where it is located? And the most important thing…do you know how to use it?
If you do not have one at home, we recommend that you purchase one right away. You can find small ones for as little as $20. The next step is to learn how to properly use it in case of a fire emergency.
REMEMBER THE ACRONYM PASS
Pull
Pull the pin. This allows you to start discharging the extinguisher.
Aim
Aim at the base of the fire.
Squeeze
Squeeze the top handle or lever.
Sweep
Sweep from side to side until the fire is out.
Most fire extinguishers last for many years, but if they are not properly maintained, if you see a lot of rust, it might be time to get a new one.

Do you think you may have mold after a severe storm?
7/8/2021 (Permalink)
It’s been raining a lot in Decatur these past few weeks. Those are some ideal conditions where mold can spread quickly since it requires moisture and high temperatures to spread throughout our homes. If you can see something resembling mold…it is probably mold.
Prevention and maintenance are key to keep your attic mold-free. Call a professional roofing company to inspect your roof and check for leaks. A small leak over a long period of time can cause extensive damage to your home.
Inspect your attic regularly and make sure vents are not blocked by boxes, crates, critters, or insulation. If your HVAC system is in your attic, check to see if there are any leaks or excessive moisture around the unit (pay close attention to the condensate pan and drain line.) Make sure ducts from the kitchen or bathrooms run to the exterior of your home and not just the attic.
Have a Mold Problem? Call Us Today at 404-378-9998. We specialize in water and mold damage restoration, with advanced training in restoration techniques and the experience and specialized equipment to quickly restore your property.

Do you know the difference between a tornado watch and a tornado warning?
7/7/2021 (Permalink)
We’ve had an incredibly stormy summer around Decatur. Do you know what it means to be under a tornado watch? Do you know the difference between a tornado warning and a tornado watch? Tornadoes are arguably nature's most violent storms and it is important to be knowledgeable about these differences.
The National Weather Service says that an easy way to remember the difference is Tornado Watch- Be Prepared! Tornado Warning- TAKE ACTION!
A Tornado Watch is issued by the Storm Prediction Center (NOAA) https://www.spc.noaa.gov/ and it means that tornadoes are possible in our area. A Tornado Warning means that a tornado has been sighted, and there is imminent danger to your life and your home. Go to an interior room, with no windows, on the lowest level of your home. If you live in a mobile home, seek shelter in a building. Make sure you have a way to get real-time warnings (TV, radio, weather app, Wireless Emergency Alert, etc.)
It is important to remember that just because nothing happened last time there was a tornado warning or watch in your area does not mean it cannot happen now. Tornadoes can cause massive destruction within seconds, so always, always, always err on the side of caution.
If you have storm damage, please do not hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998.

Tips to avoid grill fires
6/1/2021 (Permalink)
The summer is the peak season for grilling fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, from 2014 to 2018, grills, hibachis, or barbecues were involved in more than 10,600 home fires per year.
Homeowners need to check the readiness of their outdoor cooking equipment – like grills and propane tanks – to help ensure summer cooking fires don’t become house fires.
- Check your grill for cleanliness and damage. Remove grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill before the first use and after each subsequent use.
- Position your grill well away from your home and deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging trees.
- Keep children and pets at a safe distance – at least three feet from the grill.
- Never leave the grill unattended when in use, and always grill outside.
- For propane grills: Check for leaks in the gas tank hose, and open the top before lighting the grill.
- For charcoal grills: DO NOT add starter fluid to the fire, and dispose of remaining coals in a metal container.

Most Common Causes of Water Damage in Your Home
5/27/2021 (Permalink)
- Poor gutter maintenance- You should create a routine and start inspecting your gutters once a year (more if your house is surrounded by a lot of trees). Poor gutter maintenance can cause major water damage in your whole house, like in the roof, siding, windows, trim, and doors. Inspect the gutters and make sure there are no leaky seams, standing water, missing flashing, and make sure that the downspouts are working properly.
- Plumbing issues- Older homes are more likely to have plumbing issues. If you see an increase in your water bill, immediately call a plumber so they can find potential hidden issues in your home.
- Leaky or bursting pipes- This issue can occur over a long period of time or suddenly, especially if it happens behind big appliances like a fridge or dishwasher. A small drip over time can create major issues under your floors or behind walls.
- HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Unit issues- Make sure you inspect your HVAC system regularly because it could be malfunctioning, circulating dust, malodors, and other pollutants.
SERVPRO of Decatur is always available to handle any water damage emergency, call us 24/7 at 404-378-5689.
How to prevent water damage in your home
5/24/2021 (Permalink)
There are some preventative measures homeowners can take to help avoid water damage in the home and prevent costly remediation. The longer the damage goes unnoticed and undetected, the longer it will take to fix it.
The Top 5 Ways to Prevent Water Damage
- Gutters- properly functioning gutters are essential during storm season because they help guide water away from the home and foundation. Clogged gutters can spell disaster. Without anywhere to go, the water will backflow into the home, potentially causing significant water damage. Homeowners should make it a priority to regularly clean gutters and have them professionally maintained throughout the year.
- Cut down trees- dead trees can topple over during a storm and cause major damage to your home. Roots can wrap around pipes and break them.
- Know the location of the main water break- let the whole family know how to shut it off in case of an emergency.
- Properly Storing Valuables- the best way to prevent water from destroying your belongings is with proper storage. We recommend going through your home and storing your valuables such as photo albums, books, or old toys in plastic storage bins so they are safe from the water!
- Seasonal Cleaning- throughout the year, it’s tempting to throw unused items into the basement or garage. But when a big hurricane appears, you might not have time to clear these rooms out. To avoid potential water damage from ruining your items, clean before storm season approaches.
Flooding due to heavy storms
5/24/2021 (Permalink)
Flooding in the spring is very common in the South. Immediate action is needed, and you need a company with storm damage experience like SERVPRO of Decatur to help. We provide 24-hour Emergency Services 7 days a week.
If you see mold damage that covers more than ten square feet, make sure you hire a company with vast experience in the mold remediation and emergency flood cleanup industry. Time is of the essence in these situations, and quick handling of the cleanup process can minimize the damage if it is handled within the first 24 to 48 hours.
Keep in mind that only flood insurance will cover the damage from floods. If you are not sure about your coverage, contact your insurance agent to review your policy and learn more. Keep in mind that the waiting period for flood insurance range between 14 and 30 days.

Ways to Prevent Storm Damage to Your Home
7/30/2020 (Permalink)
Summer storms around Decatur can be severe. There are a few things you can do around the house before a storm hits to minimize the damages.
Inspect Roof Regularly
New roofs should not present a lot of problems for homeowners, but if the roof is five to ten years old, it would be a good idea to inspect it for loose shingles, sheathing and nails. If you notice any of these problems, fix them right away to protect your property from sever storms.
Remove Dead Trees
Do not wait until it is too late to remove dead trees around your property. The roots of a dead tree are not strong, making it easier for it to topple over after a strong storm. Trim limbs and dead wood so there is less of a chance of them falling and damaging the roof, windows, siding, vehicles, etc.
Secure Outdoor Furniture
Secure grills, tables, umbrellas, and other furniture to prevent damaging your property.
For storm damage cleanup, call SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998
All you need to know about broken supply lines and water damage
7/30/2020 (Permalink)
A very important part of your home maintenance is the pluming system. A faulty or corroded supply line can cause major problems around your home.
Supply lines are thin hoses that run to appliances like dish washers, refrigerators, toilets, water heaters, washing machines, etc. Not every supply line is the same, and the quality and price of these items vary drastically. If homeowners opt for the cheaper versions, they have to keep in mind that hoses should be checked and replaced often. If you have never checked you supply lines, now would be a good time to do so.
Plastic lines usually have a warranty of around 5 to 7 years, and some stainless-steel water supply lines have a lifetime warranty.
If you experienced this type of water loss, call SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998 to help. Our water technicians are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) says that having a fire extinguisher available is just one element of a fire emergency plan, but always keep in mind that the most important thing is SAFETY.
OSHA regulations state that business owners and employers are responsible for the placement, use, maintenance, and testing of fire extinguishers. All employees should be trained on how to properly use a fire extinguisher and regularly do fire drills to practice the escape plan.

Determining what type of water damage you are dealing with
7/10/2020 (Permalink)
When our technicians go to a home or business, the first thing they must do is determine what kind of water damage they are dealing with. In the industry we use Categories to determine if we are dealing with clean water, gray water, or black water.
Category 1 (clean water) damage is usually from a broken pipes, rain or snow water, overflowing sinks, etc.
Category 2 (gray water) damage does not contain human waste products. It could be due to a leaking washing machine, or a leak in an aquarium.
Category 3 (black water) damage is the most contaminated type of water loss, and it comes from sewage backups or floodwater from natural disasters. If you are dealing with this type of loss, call a professional immediately.

Are you prepared to keep your family safe during a Tornado?
7/9/2020 (Permalink)
Approximately 800 tornadoes hit the United States every year. F-4 or F-5 tornadoes could cause billion of dollars in damages. Meteorologists can predict the right conditions for a tornado to form in the area a day or two in advance, but that is not always the case. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration there are four things needed for a tornado to form- moisture, instability, lift and wind shear.
During bad weather, tune in to NOAA radio or your local news channel to see the latest weather updates. Stay away from windows. There are old myths that recommended opening all the windows in the home so that the wind could circulate and that it would help equalize the pressure, but that is what they are…myths. The best thing you can do during a tornado warning is go to your basement, storm safe, or an interior room with no windows.
Lightning and Home Fires
7/8/2020 (Permalink)
The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates that local fire departments in the US respond to an average of 22,600 fires started by lightning every year. Lightning-related fires are more common from June through August, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
If you think your home has been struck by cloud-to-ground lightning, call your Decatur Fire Department immediately. When a bolt of lightning hits a surface, it is over 53,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5 times hotter than the surface of the sun). A fire might not be evident at first, until it is too late since it is common for these types of fires to start in the attic.
If you can hear thunder, you are within 10 miles of a storm, that means that your home can by struck by lightning even that far away. Stay indoors and away from windows and doors, try not to use too many electronics, and it is a good idea to unplug phones, computes, and TVs. Wait at least 30 minutes to go outside after a storm has passed.
SERVPRO of Decatur is locally owned and operated, and we are always ready to help homeowners with fire damage emergencies. If you need help, call us at 404-378-9998

Prevent Ice Maker Leaks
6/1/2020 (Permalink)
For any of your water restoration needs, call SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998
We all love how convenient it is to walk up to the fridge, press a button and get a heaping scoop of ice during a hot summer day in Decatur, but what most homeowners are not aware of is the risk of water leaks that come with having the ice maker hooked up to a water source.
The copper or plastic water line can rupture and cause a major leak, that could go unnoticed for a long period. If you notice a leak, unplug the appliance immediate to minimize the risk of electric shock. The second thing you should do is determine if the leak is coming from inside the fridge or outside. Regularly inspect and replace worn or defective parts.
GE recommends checking the water line fittings to make sure they are secure, check the water valve for leaks, see if there are any leaks from the full tube extension, the defrost water drain could be cracked or overflowing, and make sure that the refrigerator is leveled (you can use the Measure app on your smartphone)
You can purchase flood alarm sensors online or at any hardware store. If water is detected by the sensors, it will start playing a loud sound and alert you of the moisture, newer models will send a notification to your phone.
If you think you might have a leak in your home, please call SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998. Our highly trained technicians can inspect the damage using state of the art technology, like moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras and moisture sensors, to detect hidden moisture under floors or behind walls.
Your home was damaged by water…What should you do next?

man wearing a white shirt and black pants holding a clipboard and a woman wearing a black polo shirt and khaki pants holding an iPad.

We tell our customers to stop the water source right away, like shutting the main water line, sprinkler system, etc. The next step is to call a professional company, such as SERVPRO of Decatur, to help mitigate the damage.
Our highly trained crew will scope the damage, write a plan of action, and immediately start the drying process. They have state of the art technology at their disposal, such as thermal imaging cameras to detect damage hidden behind walls, ceilings, and floors. What does it mean to scope a job?
5/29/2020 (Permalink)
Our technicians walking a building scoping water damage
Experiencing water damage in your home or business is a traumatic event. After contacting a water restoration company like SERPVRO of Decatur, it is hard for homeowners to understand the drying process. Rest assured that our highly trained technicians will explain the process every step of the way.
Every crew member at SERVPRO of Decatur receives extensive training from our Training Specialist and know how to properly operate all our equipment. They will start the drying process as soon as they get to the job site.
The first thing the Crew Chief will do is scope the damage. They will use moisture sensors, thermal imaging cameras, and moisture meters to determine the areas that have been affected.
- Moisture Sensors- The techs use this tool to detect moisture in carpets and padding.
- Thermal Imaging Cameras (Infrared cameras)- We use these cameras to inspect and monitor moisture found in wet materials like walls, ceiling, floors, etc. Our technicians use this to find “hidden” spots that would have gone undetected just by looking. Another benefit of using these cameras is that we minimize the damage by avoiding unnecessary demolition of walls, floors, etc.
- Moisture Meters- Our crews use this to measure the moisture content of affected materials.
These are just a few of the tools we use to scope a job. If you have a question about what the technicians are doing, just ask them, they will be more than happy to explain the process.

Rotten plywood under the sink? Could be a sign of a long-term leak
8/2/2019 (Permalink)
Water leaks under kitchen and bathroom sinks are a common occurrence in homes. A small pipe leak that has gone undetected for a long time can cause major damage and create mold problems. It can also damage floors, subfloors, cabinets, drywall, insulation, etc. If the leak happened on an upper level, it can damage the ceiling and walls on lower level rooms.
If you start seeing water marks or discoloration under sinks that is a sign that water is getting in somehow. Regularly inspect the area under sinks, and around cabinets to make sure there are no new stains and the area is dry. You can purchase water alarm sensors online or at any hardware store. If water is detected by the sensors, it will start playing an loud sound and alert homeowners of the moisture.
SERVPRO of Decatur has the necessary knowledge, training and equipment to handle any size disaster. Call now and let our experienced crew remediate the damage. 404-378-9998.
Common sources of fire in a home
8/2/2019 (Permalink)
Approximately 1 of every 338 households per year has a reported home fire. Almost 50% of structure fires were caused by cooking equipment (pots, pans, kettles, etc.) and human error was the leading contributing factor in those fires. Never leave a stove unattended while cooking!
Another common cause of fires was due to the poor upkeep of heating equipment, such as chimneys, central heating units, portable space heaters, and fireplaces.
Older homes have a higher risk of electrical fires due to outdated wiring. If your home was built more than 20 years ago, it may not have the capacity to handle the amount of electricity, electronics and appliances we use now a days.
Smoking materials like cigarettes, cigars, etc. caused more than 17,00 fires in 2014 and are the leading cause of fire deaths. If you decide to smoke, do it outside.
Other things that can cause a fire are faulty clothes dryers and washers, candles, fan or air conditioners, and playing with a heat source.
If you need help after a fire, call SERVPRO of Decatur. We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
The Dangers of Toppled Trees in Decatur
8/2/2019 (Permalink)
When people visit our beautiful city, they rave about all the big beautiful trees. They are indeed gorgeous, but they can also cause major damage to our Decatur homes. After a strong storm, we get many calls from homeowners dealing with toppled trees in their yards and homes.
Ground saturation is mostly to blame. A rainy Georgia summer can leave the ground extremely saturated. The roots of the trees are weakened and are not strong enough to support their massive weight, and wind gusts can cause them to come crashing down on homes and vehicles.
Homeowners should inspect their yards and remove any damaged or rotten trees to prevent property damage, but even perfectly healthy trees can be uprooted during a storm.
If a tree has fallen and damaged your property, call a restoration company with the experience, resources and skills to handle any size disaster. Call SERVPRO of Decatur rapid response crew at 404-378-9998.
Hidden Water Damage Dangers
8/1/2019 (Permalink)
When people think about water damage, they think about a major event such a busted hot water heater, water rushing from the bathtub into the lower floors, or an overflowing toilet spilling water all over the bathroom. Unfortunately, hidden leaks can be as costly if they go unnoticed for a long time.
A cracked water line could cause a slow drip behind the fridge that could damage the wall behind it, rot the underfloor and end up ruining the cabinets around it. Unless you notice a puddle of water or start smelling a musty odor around the appliance, it is hard to spot the damage until it is too late.
Take the time to walk around your home and check around the toilets, under the kitchen sink, bathroom sinks, hot water heater, fridge, freezer, washing machine, dishwasher, etc. Regularly inspect the crawlspace, attic, and basement for signs of long-term water damage, leaks, and mold.
If you are dealing with moisture issues, you can call SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998 to schedule an inspection.

Keep your Decatur building clean and your concrete floors shiny with these tips
7/31/2019 (Permalink)
One would think that concrete floors are relatively easy to maintain and keep clean, but just because they are easy does not mean that they don’t require regular attention and upkeep.
Some of the advantages of having concrete floors are that they do not require waxing and stripping every year like other types of floors, such as vinyl. They are also water resistant and won’t get damaged due to excess moisture. Concrete floors are durable and weather resistant and can withstand the effects of too much rain or sun.
How often to clean your floors will depend on how much traffic it gets.
- Use a ribbed entry carpet mat to keep dirt, mud and grime off your concrete floors. This will help with the cleaning costs and wear and tear
- Avoid harsh cleaning solutions such as bleach and vinegar
- Use a neutral cleaning agent (specially around heavy traffic areas)
- Use a microfiber pad to dry (or damp) mop
- Re-seal your concrete floors every few years
Do you have a fire extinguisher in your home?
7/31/2019 (Permalink)
Do you know if you have a fire extinguisher in your home? Is it in working order? What kind of fire is it for? In case of an emergency, do you know how to use it? All of these are important questions you should know ahead of time, because in a fire emergency, you probably won’t have time to stay calm and think all of this through.
Every single homeowner should have at least one fire extinguisher in their home (preferably one on every level).
Remember the word PASS
- Pull- Pull the pin
- Aim- Aim low at the base of the fire
- Squeeze- Squeeze the lever above the handle
- Sweep- Sweep from side to side
For residential properties, it is recommended to have a multi-purpose fire extinguisher class ABC. If you have questions about how to use one, call the Decatur fire department.
If you recently experienced a fire in your home, you can call SERVPRO of Decatur to help you with the cleanup process. 404-378-9998

Are you ready for a busy tornado season?
7/12/2019 (Permalink)
Experts say that tornado season could be very active this year in Georgia. Tornadoes are really unpredictable and sometimes they touchdown without much warning since it is very difficult to forecast, sometimes giving people less than 15 minutes to take shelter between the warning and the actual touchdown. Tornadoes kill an average of 60 people every year in America according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Tornadoes appear as funnel-shaped rotating clouds extending from the closed base to the ground. On average, they last less than ten minutes and they tend to move from southwest to northeast (but not always).

When was the last time you clean your dryer?
7/11/2019 (Permalink)
It is hard to imagine, but dryer vent fires are one of the leading causes of residential fires in the U.S. According to the U.S. Fire Administration 2,900 dryer fires are reported each year and cause $35 million in property damage. 34% of those fires were caused by not cleaning the dryer.
If you are noticing that your clothes are not drying as fast as they used to, that could be a sign that it has been a while since you last cleaned your dryer vents. Your dryer works by removing moist, hot air, so if there is something preventing that air from getting out, your garments will need a few extra minutes to dry.
Here are some useful tips
- Make sure your dryer is installed and serviced by a professional.
- Always use a lint filter, and make sure you clean it before and after you use it.
- Clean the back of the dryer.
- Inspect the venting system to ensure that it’s not restricted

The fire could have damaged furniture, clothing, textiles, personal belongings, walls, ceilings, etc., and harmful toxins could have traveled to other parts of the home. What does it mean when we talk about clean, gray, and black water?
6/4/2019 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Decatur- 404-378-9998
Some people new to the water damage business may be wondering what is the difference between clean water, gray water and black water. It is important to identify what kind of water affected your business because different sources of water cause different types of damage.
Clean water
This is the least contaminated, and it comes from a relatively sanitary source. It does not contain waste products and it comes from overflowing sinks, burst pipes, broken appliances, snow and rain.
Gray Water
Gray water contains waste products but it does not contain human waste products. Examples of this are dishwasher leaks, washing machine leaks, aquarium malfunctions, waterbeds, groundwater coming through the foundation. This type of water loss does not present the hazard of spreading diseases.
Black Water
This is the most contaminated type of water loss. The most common type is sewage back-ups. Floodwaters could be categorized as black water. In the restoration business we refer to black water damage as Category 3.

Avoid Basement Flooding
6/3/2019 (Permalink)
Call us today at 404-378-9998
We hate to say it but basements are prone to flooding and it can happen at any time, even if your basement has never flooded before. And the reason is simple…gravity. Water will move from high ground to the lowest ground possible, and since basements are built below the ground level, that is where water wants to travel to. Even a small amount of water in your basement can damage walls, floors, carpeting, personal belongings, and can even help mold spread.
If you experience a flooded basement, the first step you should take is to determine the source. Was it because there was a storm or a natural disaster, sewer issues, or is it a recurring problem, such as foundation issues.
If your basements needs water mitigation, call SERVPRO of Decatur today.
Water damage and gutters
6/3/2019 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Decatur today- 404-378-9998
When was the last time you inspected the gutters in your home? If it has been more than a year, you should probably do it sooner rather than later, specially if your home is surrounded by a lot of trees.
Poor gutter maintenance can cause major water damage in your house, roof problems, mold and mildew, foundation and crawlspace issues, structural damage, siding damage, rotting windows, trim and doors, and damage to the gutter itself.
Inspect that there are no leaking seams, standing water, missing flashing, and make sure that the downspouts are installed properly. The water must travel away from the home from the downspouts.
Remember always exercise caution if you decide to inspect your gutters, since it can be dangerous maneuvering a ladder to inspect hard to reach places. When in doubt, call a professional to help you with the task.
If you see any water damage, call SERVPRO of Decatur to help you- 404-378-9998

The Ferst Readers of Henry County provides children in this county with books from birth until they turn five years old.
Everybody participating in this event has so much fun each year because each table has a theme based on a book. This year we chose to decorate our table inspired by the book Stars by Mary Lyn Ray.

Don't wait, inspect your HVAC unit today
Spring is the perfect season to clean your heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). How long has it been since you last check your HVAC unit? If it’s been a while, it could be not functioning properly, circulating dust, malodors and other pollutants. When in doubt, hire a professional to look at your HVAC unit. They will perform a thorough cleaning and make sure your unit is working properly. This will extend the life of the unit and save you money in the long run.

After a fire, clean your WHOLE Decatur house
1/2/2019 (Permalink)
If you need our help call us today at 404-378-9998
Fire damage, including smoke and soot, affects not only the structure of your house but also your belongings. Smoke and soot is extremely invasive and can get into all kinds of nooks and crannies in your home.
Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of your house, and smoke flows through the plumbing systems, traveling through holes around your home from the basement all the way up to the attic. The type of soot depends on what burned in the house. There are two different types of smoke – Wet and Dry. How to Deal with Storm Damage in Your Home
11/12/2018 (Permalink)
Call Us Today- 404-378-9998
Mother Nature to cause extensive and expensive damage to your home or business. It’s been such a rainy season in Georgia that it doesn’t take much to bring trees and powerlines down.
Here are a few tips to prevent storm damage to your property
- CLEAN THE GUTTERS (preferably twice a year, but definitely in the fall). It doesn’t take a lot of dead leaves and branches to clog downspouts.
- Check your roof for loose or missing shingles. If you see that your roof is damaged, repair it immediately. It is much cheaper to replace missing shingles than wait and be forced to repair your ceilings, walls, and deal with mold due to poor maintenance.
- Walk around your yard and inspect trees- If you are not sure if a tree needs to come down, call a tree expert
- If you have any questions about your coverage, call your insurance agency.
Let SERVPRO of Decatur keep your home safe from storm and water damage. Our crews are highly trained and we use specialized equipment to restore your property to its pre-storm condition.

Appliances and Water Damage
8/3/2018 (Permalink)
Call SERVPRO of Decatur Today at 404-378-9998
Any of your appliances connected to a water line could potentially cause water damage. One of the most frequent problems that we see is water damage from a leaky refrigerator. Unlike other types of water damage, this can happen over a long period of time without the homeowner noticing it, since the damage is hidden under and behind the fridge.
If you have the ice maker connected to the water line, make sure the line fittings are secured. Check water valves and defrost drains for leaks or cracks. If the fridge has a clogged defrost drain, the water will leak into the lower compartment of your fridge and run onto the floor. Condensation could be another reason why water is pooling around the fridge, since it can run down the walls and into the floor. The best way to avoid dealing with water damage cause by your fridge is to regularly check and maintain the appliance.

Don’t let a water loss turn into a contaminated loss
8/3/2018 (Permalink)
Call Us Today – We’re Ready To Help 404-378-9998
During the summer, if your business experiences a water loss where the power is shut off, the high temperatures and high humidity can cause microbes to grow much faster than one would think possible. We don’t like to think about it, but microbes are everywhere, and they can grow everywhere in your facility (wood, paper, drywall, insulation, carpet, etc.) These microbes become airborne and spread to other clean areas and create cross-contamination.
They key is to act fast to prevent a water loss job to grow into a contaminated loss. If it is possible, and safe to do so, start extracting the water and get power restored as soon as possible. Decrease the temperature and moisture in the building. If possible try to keep humidity below 60 percent.
You need a company that is qualified to avoid microbe growth. Here at SERVPRO of Decatur, we are focused on reducing business interruption, reducing claims cost and minimizing callbacks. Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate the problem quickly and safely.

How to prevent kitchen fires
8/3/2018 (Permalink)
The kitchen is where most of the home fires occur.
More than 3,300 Americans die each year in fires and 15,000 are injured. Here are a few tips to help prevent and remove kitchen fire hazards
- Keep kitchen towels, oven mitts, plastic bags and curtains far from an open flame and the oven.
- Don’t leave food on the stove unattended, since it only takes a second for a big fire to start.
- Clean the stove and grill regularly to prevent grease buildup, since grease fires are one of the worst. Remember NEVER pour water on a grease fire
- NEVER use your oven to heat your home.
- Make sure all the burners and the oven are turned off.
- Unplug electric appliances when you are not using them.
- If possible wear short sleeves, since wide sleeves can catch fire without you even noticing it.
- Install a smoke detector in a hallway close to the kitchen.
- Keep a fire extinguisher in the kitchen. Check our blog about Fire Extinguishers to learn more.

How to remove mold from carpet
8/3/2018 (Permalink)
If you think you have mold in your carpet, you need to determine if what you see is really mold. Although test kits are available to purchase in many big box home improvement stores, understanding what a test result means requires the help of an expert. Therefore an Indoor Environmental Professional (IEP) should be contacted to inspect and test the suspected mold to determine the extent of the damage and what course of action needs to be taken.
After the IEP gets the test results, they can advise you on the extent of the mold problem, the toxicity of the mold, and whether you can handle yourself or hire a certified remediator. If you choose to do it yourself, be smart and make sure you use adequate protection, because the most important thing is your health. Wear a respirator, gloves, goggles, etc.

- Keep a 3-foot save zone around grills and campfires
- Place coals from the grill in a metal container with a lid.
- Never leave a campfire or grill unattended.

Fire damage can take many different forms so it is important to know what to look out for. Watch out for the following types of commercial fire damage and call the experts at SERVPRO as soon as possible to prevent the damage from getting worse.
- Class A fire damage: This type of fire damage is the result of a fire involving flammable solids, such as, various plastics, paper, rubber, wood, and cloth. This category of fire damage most likely spreads from a single source, which makes it easier for individuals to quickly isolate the fire and put it out with a fire extinguisher.
- Class B fire damage: Class B fire damage consists of damage as a result of flammable liquids or solids that can become liquefied. This includes gasoline and various forms of petrol, oil, various waxes and plastics, and paint. However, fires caused by cooking oils and fats don’t count as Class B. These fires are known to spread very quickly and tend to cause vast damage.

More often than not, this type of damage is explosive and can cause tremendous destruction in the property's structure. Does Your Decatur Home Have A Mold Problem?
6/4/2018 (Permalink)
Moldy Drywall
Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
- Mold spores flourish on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can direct you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

The problems that broken supply lines cause
6/4/2018 (Permalink)
SERVPRO of Decatur is a phone call away. 404-378-9998
When most people see that SERVPRO is a flood cleanup company and they think, "I don't live by an ocean or pond or river so the chance of my house flooding is next to nothing."
But, what most people don't know is that the majority of flooding calls we get come from broken supply lines. Supply lines are those thin hoses that run to appliances like refrigerators, dish washers, toilets, water heaters, clothes washers, etc. The quality and price of these hoses vary drastically. Most people opt for the least expensive option without knowing that cheap hoses need to be checked and replaced often. Sudden bursts and slow drips both can cause a substantial amount of damage which require flood mitigation and sometimes mold remediation. If you haven't checked you supply lines in a while, or ever, now would be a good time to do so.
We are available to provide estimates to any supply lines that may be of concern.

- Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.
- Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.
The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry
The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. Tips for Preparing Your Business for Winter Weather
1/8/2018 (Permalink)
Icy Conditions
Much of Georgia is under a winter weather advisory with freezing rain and ice accumulation expected.
Here are a few tips your business should consider right now to prepare for inclement weather
- Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain and ice can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
- Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
- Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
- Ask SERVPRO of Decatur Professionals about starting a Disaster Recovery Plan for your business.
Smoke and Soot Cleanup

Have Questions about Fire, Smoke, or Soot Damage? Call Us Today – 404-378-9998
Smoke and soot facts
- Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
- Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
- The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.
Different Types of Smoke
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Decatur will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
Our Fire Damage Restoration Services
Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Flooding in Georgia
8/10/2017 (Permalink)
According to the World Economic Forum, “in the last 20 years, flooding has been the most common natural disaster by far, accounting for 43% of all recorded events.” We can completely understand this with all of the rain and floods we have been having in Georgia this summer! You wake up on a Saturday morning ready to relax by the pool or go to the lake after a busy week at the office, only to see the dark clouds glooming over you. You see the trees shaking from the gusts of wind blowing by and you hear the thunder in the distance. You hope that the storm will “blow over” quickly, but then it begins to pour. You watch as the water accumulates across your property and then, just like that, the water is now intruding into your home. Now are you not going to be able to spend your weekend outside enjoying a dip in the pool, but your basement has become your own personal swimming ground! Take the measures to prevent additional damage to your home or office, then call SERVPRO of Decatur to properly take care of the damage that has already been done.

What is Black Mold?
8/9/2017 (Permalink)
Do not let mold growth get out of control in your home, give us a call at 404-378-9998!
According to the CDC Stachybotrys chartarum is a greenish-black mold more commonly known as “black mold” or “toxic mold.” This type of mold is known to grow on material that has high cellulose and low nitrogen content, for example, fiberglass, gypsum board, paper, dust, and lint. Mold growth occurs when there is constant moisture exposure from water damage, excessive humidity, water leaks, condensation, or flooding.
Molds are very common in buildings and homes and will grow anywhere indoor where moisture is present, so you should be aware of this fact and be proactive in searching for potential mold growth. If any mold is found in your home or business it should be inspected and treated by a professional, you should be cautious around the infected area and be sure not to touch or disturb the mold.
If you are worried about mold growth in your home or business let SERVPRO of Decatur help you out!

Tornado Facts
8/9/2017 (Permalink)
According to the weather channel, Georgia is the U.S. state with the most tornadoes so far in 2017, setting a new state record of 102 tornadoes. With that in mind it is important to be knowledgeable and up to date on these facts about tornadoes.
Tornadoes are arguably nature's most violent storms. Generated from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes generally appear as rotating, funnel-shaped clouds extending from the closed base to the ground. With winds that can reach up to 300 miles per hour, tornadoes can cause massive destruction within seconds. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and fifty miles long.
- The average tornado moves southwest to northeast, but tornadoes have been known to move in any direction.
- The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 miles per hour, but may vary from stationary to 70 miles per hour.
- Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land.
- Tornadoes are most frequently reported east of the Rocky Mountains during spring and summer months.
- Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.

How to Prevent Water Damage
8/9/2017 (Permalink)
With a summer that has been full of so much rain, reports of water damage have been extremely high. Even though some water fiascos are completely unavoidable, there are some preventative measures you can take to help avoid water damage in your home and prevent costly repairs.
The Top 3 Ways to Prevent Water Damage
- Properly Storing Valuables
As mentioned above some storms and leaks you cannot predict, but the best way to prevent water from destroying your belongings is with proper storage. We recommend going through your home and storing your valuables such as photo albums, books, or old toys in plastic storage bins so they are safe from water!
- Seasonal Cleaning
Throughout the year, it’s tempting to throw unused items into the basement or garage. But when a big hurricane appears, you might not have time to clear these rooms out. To avoid potential water damage from ruining your items, clean before storm season approaches.
- Gutters
Properly functioning gutters are essential during storm season because they help guide water away from the home and foundation. Clogged gutters can spell disaster. Without anywhere to go, the water will backflow into your home, potentially causing significant water damage. Make it a priority to regularly clean gutters and have them professionally maintained throughout the year.

Fire Damage: The Dangers You Can't See
8/8/2017 (Permalink)
When it comes to your health and the health of the people you love, don't take any risks. Give us a call today!
If told to image fire damage, we would probably all visualize a similar picture. Roaring flames that once spread throughout a home now leaves behind blackened debris, burnt furniture and belongings, thick soot all over the walls, and a smell of smoke that you think is going to be impossible to ever get rid of. While all of these things can be harmful to humans, and pets alike, the most dangerous thing that fires can leave behind are invisible asbestos deposits and the combustion deposits of lead paint. These chemicals are especially harmful to children and the elderly.
Although more recently built homes are less susceptible to the dangers of asbestos and lead paint, those homes and buildings built prior to 1980 may contain these chemicals. In these cases, it is important that professional remediation is used when dealing with a fire. The professionals at SERVPRO of Decatur is here to help with all of your remediation and restoration needs!
The Importance of Cleaning Dryer Vents
8/8/2017 (Permalink)
According to the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Data Center, clothes dryers are responsible for more than 15,000 structure fires around the country each year, and 80% of those fires start with clogged dryer vents.
There are a few warning signs that your dryer vent needs to be cleaned out. One sign is if your laundry is taking longer to dry than usual; dryers work by removing hot, moist air, so if something is preventing that air from getting out, your laundry will most likely need a few extra cycles to dry. Another sign is if you notice that your clothes have a strange smell, this could mean that your dryer is not ventilating properly.
To reduce the risk of these fires happening in your or your insured’s home or business, SERVPRO of Decatur can help clean dryer vents and ducts that may have lint buildup.
For more information on cleaning dryer vents contact SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998.
Is Mold Hiding in Your Attic?
8/8/2017 (Permalink)
Do not led mold take over your attic! Call SERVPRO of Decatur today!
If you are anything like me, the only time you make it up to your attic is during the holidays when you are trying to find the decorations you stored up there a year ago. An attic can be a somewhat scary location where cob webs tend to take over and homeowners tend to avoid. In our experience, 95% of all mold problems in attics go completely unnoticed for a long time due to the fact that most people do not spend any time up there.
Attic mold tends to be discovered during a home inspection when homeowners are getting prepared to put their house on the market, and it is almost always a shocking surprise to find out that your attic has had mold growing in it for who knows how long!
That is why it is very important to be proactive. Don’t be afraid to wander around your attic from time to time to search for signs of mold. Finding mold growth in the early stages makes it far easier to remove and is much cheaper than letting it fester and not taking action.
The approach is simple: if you see visible mold, it should be removed!
Thunderstorm Safety and How to Prepare
7/20/2017 (Permalink)
Thunderstorms can happen nearly anywhere around the world and have the potential to be extremely dangerous. The typical thunderstorm is 15 miles in diameter and lasts an average of 30 minutes; nearly 1,800 thunderstorms are happening at any moment around the world! Although thunderstorms can occur year-round they are more common during the spring and summer months.
WATCH VS. WARNING
- A watch is issued when conditions are favorable for the development of severe thunderstorms in and around the watch area. It does not mean that a thunderstorm will occur, only that it is possible.
- A warning is issued when severe thunderstorms are occurring or imminent in the warning area.
BE PREPARED
- Build an emergency kit and make a family communication plan.
- Keep dead or rotting limbs trimmed to prevent them from falling during a storm.
- Do not hesitate to postpone outdoor activities.
- Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
- Shutter your windows and secure outside doors.
- Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives!
If your home or business is damaged from a storm call SERVPRO of Decatur at 404-378-9998.
Understanding Mold Remediation
7/19/2017 (Permalink)
Give us a call at 404-378-9998!
Here at SERVPRO we are trained mold damage specialists who get started quickly to tackle any mold problems you are having in your home or business. We are a qualified restoration company that understands the science behind mold and mold growth.
When signs of mold growth are found we initially are concerned with stopping the source of water feeding the mold such as a leaking hot water heater, or busted pipe. Once that source is no longer leaking we use air scrubbers to remove the particles from the air, and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of mold spores while the mold remediation is in process. Our next step is to make sure to apply an antimicrobial treatment in order to eliminate the mold colonies and to help prevent new colonies from forming. We also find t very important to completely get rid of and replace any infested porous materials, like drywall and carpeting.
If you have concerns about mold in your property call SERVPRO of Decatur and let us help you!

Fire Prevention Tips for the Workplace
7/18/2017 (Permalink)
In the event of a fire give us a call at 404-378-9998
We all know how quickly we can get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the work place and forget to stop and consider the important things we need to be consistently doing in order to keep the work place as safe as possible. Here are a couple fire prevention tips to keep in mind even while we are busy at work…
- Keep your work area free of waste paper, trash, and other items that can easily catch fire.
- Turn off electrical appliances at the end of each day.
- Do NOT overload your circuits.
- Periodically check your electrical cords, and replace any damaged cords immediately.
By following these tips you can greatly reduce the chances of an office fire, but in the event of a fire you should have an evacuation plan posted all around the building. Once everyone is safely removed from the building and the fire has been put out then you can call SERVPRO of Decatur to help mitigate the damages and make your building feel “Like it never even happened.”
How to Rescue Residential Stonework from Fire Damage
7/18/2017 (Permalink)
When a fire breaks out in your home the main concern is to put it out and then repair all of the damages to the inside of your home. But if you have experienced a moderate to severe fire it is very likely that these incidents have lead to visible marks and blemished on the outside of your home as well.
The good news is that stains on stonework, concrete and other structural materials can almost always be fixed. While brick and concrete are not indestructible, they are extremely sturdy and do not usually crack under the pressure of heat! Therefore we can use straightforward cleaning techniques to restore the outside of your property. Below are three levels of stains that might occur to the outside of your building if you experience a fire:
Light Stains
If there is no structural damage, our SERVPRO technicians can use mild cleaning agents to wash the soot and smoke damage off the surface.
Moderate Stains
The problem with soot is that it can be very acidic and if it is not removed from a structure quickly there is a chance of corrosive residues becoming embedded deep into your stonework. This is why SERVPRO makes sure to pay very close attention to cracked joints.
Heavy Stains
The most severe staining occurs when heavily combustible materials have caught fire and burned for some time. When this happens, jet washing is usually a suitable method for cleaning up the stains!
If you need help restoring your home after a fire give SERVPRO of Decatur a call at 404-378-9998.

Three Ways to Prevent Storm Damage to Your Home
7/18/2017 (Permalink)
Our highly trained crews are ready to respond 24/7 to storm or flood damage in Decatur!
An unexpected storm can hit your town at any day throughout the year. While it is hard to prepare on the spot when a storm is headed your way there are several preventative measures you can take ahead of time to minimize the risk of damage to your home when severe weather does hit. According to MoonWorks here are three steps you can take before a major storm hits your town.
- Remove Dead Wood.
By trimming the trees around your home on a regular basis there is less of a chance for heavy limbs to fall on and damage your home when large winds blow through.
- Secure Outdoor Items.
When you are aware of a storm coming your way try to put all loose items such as grills, picnic tables, umbrellas, and lawn furniture inside in order to prevent damage to these items or a nearby window.
- Inspect Roof Periodically.
A brand new roof should be able to withstand most weather that comes it way, but if your roof is more like 5-10 years old it might be time to get it checked for loose shingles, nails and sheathing. It is better to go ahead and fix these small aspects of your roof now then to have to pay for the extensive damages when a big storm hits.

- Dry wet areas immediately.
- Prevent moisture with proper ventilation.
- Equip your home with mold-resistant products.
- Monitor humidity indoors.

7/7/2017 (Permalink)
Many people or businesses tend to overlook certain aspects of their commercial buildings when they are going through their maintenance checklist. One thing that is often forgotten about is air duct cleaning, because cleaning an air duct system that is not showing any obvious problems can seem like an unnecessary expenditure of time and money. According to the National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) the rule of thumb for consumers is that “if your air ducts look dirty, they probably are.” While you do not need to clean you air ducts every year, it is not something that you do not want to forget to maintain. Below are some benefits to cleaning your air ducts:
- Improved indoor air quality
- Greater HVAC system efficiency
